What is Convexity?1
- Convexity is the outward curving of the baseplate.
- Convexity helps maintain a secure seal between the pouch and the skin
Characteristics of Convexity1
Depth
Is the distance between the highest point on the skin barrier and the base of the skin barrier.
Compressibility
The maximum amount a convex skin barrier can be flattened.
Flexibility
How easily the convex skin barrier can bend.
Tension Location
Where the convex dome presses downward and outward on the area around the stoma.
Slope
The angle between the highest point on the skin barrier and the base of the skin barrier.
When to Use Convexity1
Flush Stomas
Located at the same level as the abdomen skin surface, and does not protrude
Retracted Stomas
Stoma pulled into the abdomen below skin level or having little or no spout
Skin Folds
A stoma which is deep in a skin fold/crease
Soft or Flaccid Abdomens
An abdomen requiring firm level of support to stabilize the pouching system
