  • Palliative

    Affording relief of symptoms but not cure.
  • Pancreas

    Glandular organ located in close proximity to the duodenum that secrets digestive enzymes, insulin and glucagon.
  • Patent

    Open.
  • Pathogen

    Any virus, bacteria, or other agent that causes disease.
  • Perianal

    Around or near the anus.
  • Perineal

    Relating to the perineum.
  • Peristalsis

    The progressive contractions of the intestines by which the contents are pushed toward the outlet.
  • Peritoneal dialysis

    Removal from the body of soluble substances and water by transfer across the peritoneum (abdominal membrane), using a dialysis solution that is intermittently introduced and removed from the peritoneal cavity.
  • Peritoneum

    Very smooth serous membrane lining the walls of the abdominal and pelvic cavities.
  • Peritonitis

    Inflammation of the abdominal lining (peritoneum).
  • Polyposis

    Multiple polyps throughout the large bowel that sometimes develop into cancer; thought to be familial.
  • Polyps

    An abnormal mass of tissue commonly found in vascular organs. Multiple Familial Polyposis is a congenital hereditary condition of the large intestine in which there are hundreds of polyp growths.
  • Pressure sore

    Area of ischemic necrosis and tissue ulceration that overlies a bony prominence.
  • Proximal

    Nearest the point of origin, typically the midline of the body.
  • Purulent

    Consisting of pus; of the nature of pus.
