  • Abdominal distention

    A stretching of the abdomen or increase of abdominal circumference resulting from the accumulation of gas or fluid, or abnormal tissue, in an abdominal organ or cavity.
  • Abdominal-perineal resection

    Surgical removal of the sigmoid colon, rectum, and anus and formation of a permanent colostomy.
  • Abscess

    Localized collection of pus formed by the body’s inflammatory response.
  • Adhesion

    Abnormal binding of parts to one another by a fibrous band.
  • Aganglionic Bowel

    Bowel without nerve cells (abnormal).
  • Anastomosis

    Surgical joining together of two or more hollow organs, such as joining of two loops of bowel after removal of a segment.
  • Anomaly

    A deviation from the average or norm; anything structurally unusual or irregular. Usually refers to congenital abnormalities.
  • Anus

    End of the alimentary canal.
  • Ascending colon

    First part of the large intestine, extending from the cecum to the right colic flexure.
