  • Decubitus

    The position of lying down; used to describe a pressure ulcer or bedsore. The more common and modern term is pressure ulcer. (see pressure sore).
  • Dehisce

    To split apart or open as in the abnormal spontaneous reopening of a surgical abdominal wound.
  • Dehiscence

    Separation of the opposing edges of an incision or closed wound.
  • Descending colon

    Part of the large intestine between the left colic flexure and the sigmoid colon.
  • Dilate

    Distend or stretch beyond normal dimensions.
  • Distal

    Farthest point from reference, typically from the midline of the body.
  • Distal bowel

    Located farthest away from the trunk, midline or heart. For example, the rectum is distal to the colon.
  • Diversion

    Variation and departure from the natural conditions.
  • Diverticulitis

    An inflammation of a diverticulum of the bowel.
  • Diverticulum

    An outpouching of a hollow (or a fluid filled) structure in the body.
  • Diverting colostomy

    A temporary colostomy for the purpose of resting a diseased or repaired portion of bowel.
  • Duodenum

    Division of the small intestine, so named because its length is equal to the breadth of twelve fingers; the first part of the small intestine that connects proximally with the pylorus and extends to the jejunum.
