Fungal infections
Antifungal ointments, rather than creams, provide a moisture barrier, and help eliminate the fungi.1
Aloe Vesta® Antifungal Ointment
When the skin’s moisture barrier is lost, there is an increase in the normal bacteria that are present in the body as well as the bacteria that can cause disease. Various types of fungi can also occur. Patients with fecal and urinary incontinence face the greatest risk of infection because they are exposed to bacteria and digestive enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract that are usually present in the stool. Fungal infections typically occur in the perineal area or in the body folds where moisture and warmth are present. Antifungal ointments, rather than creams, provide a moisture barrier, and help eliminate the fungi.1 Fungal infections of the skin may be treated with topical agents such as Aloe Vesta® Antifungal Ointment.
When necessary, protective barriers may be used in addition to moisture barriers to provide even better protection.1 Sensi-Care® Protective Barrier from ConvaTec is one such protective barrier.
